Cats are animals that are often kept as pets. Many pet cats are a mixture of many different cat types, so they are often called non-pedigrees or crossbreds. In the cat show world non-pedigree cats are called domestic cats, to distinguish them from pedigree or purebred cats such as the Abyssinian or Persian.
It is now generally agreed among experts that today's domestic cats are descended from the African wildcat.
