New Zealand is in the south-western Pacific Ocean. It is made up of two large islands; the North Island and the South Island, and many smaller islands. The Maori name for New Zealand is called Aotearoa which means 'Land of the Long White Cloud'.

The population of New Zealand is about 4 million (2005). The capital is Wellington. Other large cities include Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin.
