Throughout history most sculptors have set out to produce a work of art that is as permanent as is possible. Therefore they have usually used long-lasting and frequently expensive materials, such as bronze, marble or granite. Some have used even more expensive materials, such as gold, silver, jade, and ivory. Cheaper sculptures were made from wood, terra cotta and other ceramics, or cast from metals such as pewter. Modern sculptors now have access to other materials such as glass, iron or liquid crystals.
Some sculptures are deliberately made to be short-lived. Examples are ice sculpture and sand sculpture.
