World Population Day seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The world's population has doubled since 1960, and is increasing rapidly by more than 75 million people a year. In 1999 the world’s population reached 6 billion people, and is expected to increase to 9 billion or more people a year by 2050. Most of the increase will be in the world’s poorest and most under-developed countries.
The
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity.
