SOUTH AMERICA

South America is the fourth largest continent. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east; and by North America and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest. Covering an area of nearly 18 million square kilometres, South America has more than 370 million people.

Machu Picchu © Peter and Jackie Main Machu Picchu is at 2,430 metres above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest of Peru. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments.
