Pohutukawa Trees

The Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) is a coastal evergreen tree. It produces a brilliant display of red flowers from November to January. They can grow up to 20 metres in height.

Pohutukawa are under threat due to browsing by the possum, which strips the trees of their leaves. A charitable conservation trust called Project Crimson was formed with the aim of promoting the survival and reversing the decline in the numbers of Pohutukawa.
